Beyond
the Fence

Shot on a motion capture device, & relying on viewer participation to complete the work by adding a live foley effects soundtrack, this participatory work sits at the intersection between community, myth and politics, &  engages with notions around essentialist, mythic and monolithic forms of community or collectivity. It draws on French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy’s 1985 text, The Inoperative Community, which addresses post Marxist theories of community, while arguing against cultural essentialism. The work also considers the geographical space and psychological state known in old Norse as 'that which is inside the fence and that which is beyond the fence', as something which attempts to define the limits of community identity itself.
